Festivals

The California Music Educator Association Central Section hosts a number of music rating festivals in Kern County. Our Treasurer, Peggy Biller, is the CMEA festival coordinator for Kern County. Please contact Peggy with any questions not addressed here at pbillerCMEAcentral@gmail.com.

Registration for large group festivals is done through CMEA's website. Follow the link below and watch the instructional video in order to register your large group ensemble.

Note: You must be a member of CMEA in order to participate in a CMEA ratings festival.

Sight reading requirements have changed for CMEA festivals this year: in order to be eligible for a unanimous superior, you must sight read.  For more information, CLICK HERE.

BC Jazz Day

The 5th annual Jazz Day at Bakersfield College will be April 2 this year.  For those unfamiliar with the event, Jazz Day is similar to a festival, in which school jazz bands perform and are given feedback by a set of judges, but unlike CMEA festivals, students are given a variety of other opportunities for growth and development of their jazz studies throughout the day.

Each participating ensemble receives a 25-minute clinic, gives a performance that is professionally recorded, and is encouraged to attend breakout workshops throughout the day, as well as a lunchtime jam session.

The priority registration deadline for High School ensembles is Thursday, March 5. Junior High and Middle School programs will be considered after that date if there are slots available. Registration fees are due by Thursday, March 19.

The man who disparages music as a luxury and non-essential is doing the nation an injury. Music now, more than ever before, is a national need.
